War of the Plagues
How YHWH’s judgments on Egypt were a declaration of cosmic war against her gods

Four hundred years of silence and doubt ended with the revealing of a name.
Egypt did not recognize this name, and it definitely did not fit inside her temples or her cosmology. The name simply said: I AM. No grand genealogy was laid out showcasing ancestral divine authority over earth or heaven. The authority of self-existence moved this name into the most powerful empire on earth demanding the release of an enslaved nation.
Pharaoh’s answer was predictable.
“Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice?”
He had a pantheon of gods behind him. Why would he flinch at one more name? Pharaoh was the seen as the son of Ra and none could challenge him… or so he thought.
Pharaoh would soon find out that this wasn’t a negotiation between a king and a forgotten Egyptian prince turned shepherd, it was the opening arena for the first battle of a cosmic war between the true God and every rival power Egypt had ever bowed to. The entire known world would see the power of YHWH as He unleashed plagues on Egypt’s gods.
The Plagues
Modern readers tend to flatten the plagues into a highlight reel of miracles — water turned to blood, invading frogs, bug infestations, dead livestock, and darkness. While each of the plagues are truly miraculous in their own right, they have been slightly reduced down to abnormal naturalistic phenomenon. Sunday school flannel boards have pacified them, and teachers often skip through them as they make their way to Passover.
The point is missed entirely.
Every plague was a precisely aimed assault on the claims to divine power that Egypt’s gods held over creation, fertility, kingship, and cosmic order. The plagues were not merely improvised ten random disasters. YHWH executed multiple, specific, and deliberate judgments “against all the gods of Egypt” (Exod. 12:12).
This was covenant warfare fought in the language Egypt understood best. Pharaoh, Egypt, the surrounding nations, and even Moses did not know the name YHWH until this moment. Soon, they all will know and fear His holy Name.
